Happy 2nd Birthday, Trey!

Today is your 2nd Birthday! Where does the time go? I simply can't believe that this day, 2 years ago, your were born. Mommy and Daddy love you so much that it simply hurts sometimes to the think about how much our hearts swell with love and pride for you, Trey.

Our Firstborn.

You, trey, have broken us in, taught us the ropes of parenting and we couldn't have asked for a better little guy to do that :) As you have certainly taught us many many things over the last two years but here is what comes to mind instantly when i think of what you have taught Mommy and Daddy:

1. that our hearts could open up and love another person as much as we love you. like a balloon our heart swells more and more for the love we have for you is so profound i sometimes lose my breath
2. you taught, Mommy, that i am actually good at something.
For a longtime, I never really found my "niche" that thing that i am innately good at.
Sure, I'm a good friend, and a great listener, but I never found my "calling". I wasn't really good at school athletics(competition gives me butterflies which causes gas, i actually tooted while trying out for 8th cheeleader: did a cartwheel and was so nervous i just tooted and it was loud, still made the squad, though :) )I hope you inherit a competitive nature from your Aunt Ashley(she is a solid competitior, aslways has been:)), and well, I didn't really excel at school, certainly maintained a B average but school just wasn't my thing either(again, take after Aunt Ashley she is a SMARTY PANTS), I liked teaching but wasn't crazy about it, Real Estate is OK, but nothing i just get tickled over AND then YOU, my Firstborn, were brought into my life and
BAM BOOM BING...there it was.
I am actually really good at being your Mommy. Sure we went throught alot that first year, Daddy and I we didn't know what we were doing and you were pretty much "trial and error" but we made it, the 3 of us, without too much bruising :) So I thank you for teaching me and letting me be your Mom, something that comes more naturally than I ever imagined.
3.You taught us that sleeping in now means "7:15" and we are grateful for that, better than 6:15 :)
4. You taught us that "just being" together means the most to you. And thats what we do. Alot of the times we spend our weekends doing "nothing" but in reality it is that "nothing" that is actually a whole lotta of "something" just cuddling, laughing, playing, being silly.
5.You have taught us to never ever ever leave you alone, not for one second! you are and always have been a climber and let me just say, that it is EXHAUSTING having climber in the house. In your two years of life I have called 911 2x, the first year for climbing on the table and you fell and this year actually, YESTERDAY, you climb into your stoke(namebrand for all you mommas out there beware this can happen)highchair and slid both your legs into 1 slot, they were stuck so badly your entire legs, down to your toes turned BLUE....i was so fearful you were going to either lose circulation or break your legs. Called 911 and they were here to cut you free. Of course, all you could talk about was the firetruck outside your house :) Point is, you have taught me and daddy to have an EAGLE EYE on you at all times.
6.You have taught us to never try and wash "Blankie" before bedtime or naptime in the chance it doesn't get finished drying becase you will not sleep without it...we learned the hard way!
7. When i observe you and daddy the biggest thing i notice that You have taught him is affection. Daddy has always been very affectionate with me and watching him open up with you is just beautiful to watch. Daddy kisses on you, holds you, takes care of all your boo boos and is the most silly i have ever seen him be, when he is around you!
8. Patience. Patience. Patience.
9.That even at age 2, you like who you like and don't who you don't! Just like adults. Meaning you are very picky about babysitters etc and your sphere of influence is very important to you. Your safety net. Your either in Trey's sphere or not :)
I am sure you have taught us much more, Trey, but this is what comes to mind! when I think of a quote to start your 2nd Birthday off with, as you will be going to "school" in the fall and lots of new adventures await you in this big, sometimes cruel world: I thought this one was perfect from Pooh Bear: Love Your Mommy:

“If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember. you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. i'll always be with you.”

Winnie the Pooh

Trey, we have been applying to different schools for you and one of them asked us to "describe your child" this is what Daddy said/wrote and i think it depicts your personality at this age to the tea!

"Trey likes to be engaged. Whether it is helping mom with something in the kitchen, playing with a toy or reading a book, he seems to thrive on stimulation. We find it fascinating to watch him playing – its like you can see the little cogs turning and him mentally putting ideas together. Trey’s best days are when he has plenty to do, see and explore. His toughest days (for him and us) are days where he doesn’t get that type of stimulation – for instance on a long car ride.

Trey is becoming independent (to the extent a 21 month old can be). He wants to figure things out himself – he doesn’t want you to do it for him. He may ask for help, but he wants to try everything himself. When he is thinking real hard, he sticks his tongue out a little bit – we hope that he grows out of that before he hits his 30’s, but it is cute for now.

Trey is a caring child. Whether it is giving mom or dad a kiss before they walk out the door or looking after our two dogs, Trey looks after the people around him and is an affectionate and nurturing little soul.

Trey has a sense of humor. He likes to make us laugh and likes to laugh himself. If he does something funny and we laugh, he’ll take it and run with it. He can be silly and seems to be a little bit of a performer at times. And almost as funny as when he is acting silly, is when he is in his serious mode and laser focused on something – nothing can distract him, even getting his tickle spot.

We love our son to the moon and back and think this description sums up Trey’s personality nearing the age of 2"!
